Vice-President Saulos Chilima says Malawi is counting on Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) to complement efforts in accelarating national development through improved social service delivery to the people.

Chilima said this in Lilongwe on Monday at the opening of a Cabinet Orientation on PPPs at Malawi Institute of Management (MIM).

The Vice-President, who later chaired a closed door session with the ministers, said the objective of the orientation was to ensure that the rationale, objectives and benefits of PPPs are understood at Cabinet level.

He said this is the reason government has made a policy decision to involve the private sector in the supply of required infrastructure in all the key sectors of the country.

“Empirical evidence shows that the private sector has sustainable competitive advantage over the State in mobilising financing and managing risks,” said Chilima.

Speaking earlier, Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC) commissioner Rosemary Mkandawire said it was important for the Cabinet to be taken through the PPP process.

“No PPP project can be implemented without Cabinet’s sanction, therefore, it was important to hold this capacity building forum,” she said.

The orientation session was funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) through its Capacity Building Assistance Initiative. n
