Pray for corruption fight, rains—clergy

Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) has asked Malawians to dedicate January 2022 to seek God’s intervention on a number of challenges facing the country, including corruption and delayed rains.

EAM secretary general the Reverend Francis Mkandawire said in a statement dated December 26 2021 that besides corruption and lack of rains, people should also pray for political stability, peace, economic recovery and an end to Covid-19.

He also tipped Christians to pray individually as families, prayer groups or in churches during church services from January 2 to 30 2022.

Mkandawire said: “Let us pray for adequate rainfall this crop growing season for a good harvest. There has been a prolonged dry spell in most of the districts throughout the country. This is worrisome. Earnestly pray for God’s divine intervention.

“Pray for all the accountability institutions such as ACB [Anti-Corruption Bureau], police, the courts and [others] that they will discharge their duties with justice and fairness.”

In an interview on Tuesday, he said they believe that only God, through prayer, can turnaround all the problems facing Malawians.

Mkandawire said: “There are times when we feel we are helpless like we talk of turning the economy around. We know it’s a global problem, but God can work a way that none of us would think of.

“So, we strongly believe that even in time when globally things are not going on well, God will hear Malawi and we will see things turning around.”

In an interview on Tuesday, governance analyst Henry Chingaipe said prayers alone are not enough to address challenges facing the country.

He said that prayer should be accompanied by human action.
