Press Trust, a public trust that assists government on developmental projects in the country, presented two school blocks at Kamwendo Primary School in Liwonde, valued at K22.1 million (about $55 250).

With the new blocks, Kamwendo will now have classes up to Standard 8. Previously it only had classes up to Standard Four before such that pupils had to transfer to other schools to start Standard Five.

While encouraging parents to send children to school, Traditional Authority Sitola and Machinga District education manager Enock Chumachawo were thankful to the trust, stating that pupils would no longer walk long distances to other schools when they get to standard five.

“In April 2010, we got a request to build extra blocks at Kamwendo so that classes could go up to Standard 8. We built two blocks with two classrooms each, and a headteacher’s office and staff room. We also brought 120 desks for the pupils,” said Press Trust executive secretary, Clement Chilingulo.

Machinga district commissioner Stuart Ngoka was also thankful, pointing out that government cannot do everything on its own.

“Government on its own cannot do everything so when others like Press Trust come with such developmental projects, we are thankful,” he said.
