Press Trust has given assorted items worth K1.4 million (about $5 600) to Dzenza Secondary School in Lilongwe following a fire which damaged a girls’ hostel and the pupils’ belongings.

When he presented the items to the school on Wednesday, trustee Dr. George Kayambo said as Press Trust, “we were all grieved and management summoned its trustees where we agreed to do something”.

“We have brought blankets, text books, mattresses and pails as a token of goodwill,” he added.

Lilongwe City North MP Jolly Kalelo (MCP) asked government to reconstruct the burnt hostel.

“We need urgent reconstruction of the hostel apart from the donations of clothes and others that we are getting. Unfortunately, government will continue selecting pupils to this school in the next academic year,” he said.

The school’s head teacher Pascal Chitundu said the hostel was built to accommodate 40 pupils, but at the time of the incident, it had over 70 pupils.

Following the incident, school officials sent home all forms One and Three pupils.

“Currently, some learners are being accommodated in home economics and computer laboratories. However, during the MSCE examinations, those in Home Economics laboratory will have to be moved out to pave way for Home Economics candidates to do examination practical test in the laboratory,” said Chitundu.
