Press Trust pumps in K6.5m for NPL Mothers’ Day Fun Run

Press Trust has pledged to continue contributing towards the Nation Publications Limited (NPL) Mother’s Day Fun Run, saying the initiative is well targeted and helps to reduce the suffering faced by many disadvantaged members of society.

Speaking in Lilongwe yesterday when presenting a cheque worth K6.5 million to NPL, trustee George Kayambo said Press Trust supports the Mother’s Day Fun Run because of its objective to reduce maternal and child mortality in the country.

Money raised for this year’s fun run—to take place in Mangochi this coming Saturday—will be used to buy various medical equipment for Mangochi District Hospital.

Said Kayambo: “NPL saw the need to mobilise resources from the private sector to complement government efforts in fighting maternal and child mortality. This is very commendable and it is the reason we continue to support it because, through NPL, we are able to reach out to many underprivileged Malawians.”

In response, NPL chief executive officer Mbumba Banda hailed Press Trust for not only being the biggest fun run donor so far this year, but also for being a faithful NPL partner that has supported the charity cause for seven years.

Said Banda: “When we sat down to see in which areas we could contribute as a company, we decided to target pregnant mothers because that is the source of life.

“In fact, 10 years ago, when we visited Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital [in Blantyre], we were told that every day women who could fill a minibus were dying in our hospitals. We said this is unacceptable and something needs to be done.”

Apart from donating the equipment to Mangochi District Hospital, Banda disclosed that some clinics around Mangochi will also benefit because they are also equally in need of medical equipment.
