Press Trust spends K4m on flood victims

Press Trust has distributed maize and beans worth K4 million to flood victims in 10 districts of the country.

George Kayambo, a trustee, said this when he presented relief items to government in Lilongwe on Friday.

“We are aware of the enormous challenge tragedies of this nature pose to people in affected areas; hence, our decision to make the donation,” said Kayambo.

Press Trust donated 50 metric tonnes of maize and 2.5 metric tonnes of beans.

Secretary and Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs, Jeffrey Kanyinji, said despite government providing humanitarian support to about two million households in 16 districts, there are still some households that are yet to be helped.

“The donation Press Trust has made is a stitch in time and will go a long way in helping the affected households.

“As government, we cannot afford to support all the affected households and we urge other organisations to emulate an example set by Press Trust,” he said.

Currently, Dedza, Salima, Machinga, Lilongwe, Mulanje, Nkhata Bay, Balaka, Zomba, Nkhotakota and Phalombe are some of the affected districts in Malawi.

Apart from food items, the victims also need plates, cups, plastic sheets and buckets.
