Prof Chisi sues MEC

Listen to this article

Umodzi Party (UP) presidential candidate Professor Chisi has sued Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for disqualifying him as a presidential candidate in the May 20 presidential race.

Chisi petitioned the High Court in Blantyre yesterday through his lawyers and in an interview later, he said he expected the court to reverse the electoral body’s decision and be allowed to contest.

Chisi, a lecturer at College of Medicine, a constituent college of the University of Malawi (Unima), said MEC disqualified him on grounds that he was a public officer, yet he took leave of absence and he has nothing to do with Unima.

He said MEC is treating him as a criminal, yet he broke no law in Malawi and he followed all the procedures. He said MEC’s action is unfair because he has spent resources and sacrificed a lot to exercise his right as a Malawian.

MEC disqualified only Chisi out of 12 presidential candidates.
