Project to improve livestock production

Centre for Community Empowerment Initiatives has launched a project to improve livestock production in Emsizini, Euthini, Mpherembe and Malidade extension planning areas in Mzimba District.

The project follows reports that livestock farmers in the district lack access to extension services, among other things.

Speaking on Wednesday during a meeting with M’mbelwa District Council Executive Committee in Mzuzu, the organisation’s chief executive officer Gilbert Banda said livestock farmers from the area also lack access to financial services and an organised market.

“So, the project seeks to bridge the gaps that exist in livestock management,” he said.

Banda also said the project will train farmers in good livestock management principles, construct slaughter houses and form village savings and loans groups.

“We want to promote livestock production for nutritional and economic well-being of women and youths,” he said.

On his part, Mzimba North assistant social welfare officer Victor Pindikani said the project will improve lives of farmers in the areas.

“We want the project to benefit vulnerable people,  including the ultra-poor and widows,” he said.

The project targets 2 500 households.
