National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust in Mulanje has expressed concern over lack of community involvement in development projects.

Nice Mulanje district civic education officer Twambilire Mwabungulu said this after touring projects under Constituency Development Fund (CDF) in Mulanje Central Constituency on Friday.

The concern came after area development committee (ADC) chairperson Richard Chintengo said they do not monitor the projects because they lack capacity in terms of training.

But Mwabungulu said communities, through ADCs and councillors, should be involved in these projects.

“They are their projects as such they should be involved from initiation to the end. If they are not satisfied with how they are being constructed, they can immediately take the contractor to task,” he said.

At Chisitu Community Day Secondary School, construction of toilets is in a mess.

The school’s head teacher, Annie Kalunga Chasuwa, said the contractor left because of payment issues.

“There was a suggestion that the toilet should be disability friendly. There were also issues to do with beam and pavement which needed money,” she said. n
