Pros using amateur gloves in Mzuzu

Professional boxers in the Northern Region have thrown caution to the wind and are using amateur boxing gloves after their standard gloves got worn-out two months ago.

The chapter’s chairperson Dustan Nyamazu and Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB) publicist Frank Chibisa yesterday said they were aware of the development.

“We are really in dire need of professional boxing gloves in our fold. The ones we had, got worn out early December and our boxers have no better option,” Nyamazu said.

According to Nyamazu, it is the responsibility of MPBCB to provide the desired gloves to the chapter and they have already sent a request on the same.

Chibisa told The Nation yesterday that they are aware of the matter and they are in the process of solving the problem.

He said the MPBCB executive committee members have agreed to contribute K45 000 each towards the purchase of new standard gloves.

“Everything will be back to normal in the next few days as we are in the process of making contributions to buy the required gloves,” Chibisa said.

He said in contrast to amateur gloves, professional boxing gloves do not have more than two colours and are lighter and thinner to allow boxers land big impact punches on opponents.

According to an article ‘The Complete Guide to Boxing Gloves,’ on www.ebay.co.uk, colour of gloves in amateur boxing is important as they are either red or blue with a white knuckle area to help judges determine when punches are landing/scoring.
