Hours after uncharacteristically surrendering the 2013 Africa Netball Championship to rivals South Africa at the Blantyre Youth Centre, Malawi Queens had some consolation on Friday night.

A stone’s throw away at the Sports Complex during an awards’ dinner, Malawi won two of the five individual awards for the five-day championship.

Tina Kamzati and Caroline Ngwira were voted best defender and best centre court respectively.

Newly crowned champions South Africa, who edged Malawi 54-52 in added time—had Vanes-Mari Du Toit named most valuable player.

A Botswana player earned the fairplay award while Uganda lanky shooter Peace Proscova deservedly scooped the best shooter award.

The awards were presented by INF regional manager Joan Smit.

Then Africa Netball vice-president Leticia Chipandu and Youth and Sports Minister Enock Chihana took over in crowing South Africa, declaring the event a success in their speeches.

“The only way for Africa is to become fully subscribed members of Africa Netball. We hope to see more teams when Botswana host the 2014 event,” Chipandu said.

Several umpires, including Whyte Mulilima, also received certificates after a successful completion of a course. n
