Queens face stern test after third win

Malawi National Netball Team, the Queens, yesterday scraped to a 56-42 victory over Zimbabwe’s Gems to register a third consecutive win at the Africa Netball Championship in Windhoek, Namibia.

The narrow win means the Peace Chawinga-Kaluwa-coached side might be disadvantaged in case they tie on points with one of the teams at the nine-team tournament.

After the match, the Queens’ coach admitted that it was not easy to outsmart the Gems, saying playing back-to-back games every day at the event was energy-sapping.

“The girls have done well, but it has to be understood that back-to-back games are very difficult,” she said.

However, Chawinga-Kaluwa said their focus is now on their tougher assignment today against defending champions and the continent’s highest ranked side South Africa’s Spar Proteas.

“Today [yesterday], we were losing the momentum on the attack. We will go back to the drawing board to rectify our mistakes to contain the Proteas tomorrow [today].” she said.

The Queens led 18-8 in the first quarter and 30-20 at half-time. They took a 43-31 lead in the third segment.

Malawi started the campaign beating Zambia 70-36 in the opening match. They beat Botswana 76-23 in the second match.
