Malawi Queens are an inch closer to Africa Netball Championship final after walking over Botswana 65-23 in a game played at the Blantyre Youth Centre today.

Queens who top Pool A having won all three games in the pool, will meet the loser between South Africa’s Protea and Uganda in the semifinal, slated for Friday morning.

Speaking to Nation Online today after beating Botswana, one of the Queens coaching assistants Mary Waya said Malawi’s target is to defend the title at all cost.

“We have worked hard to sharpen our defending skills and tactics as we were thoroughly exposed in the game against Zambia. Today, we marked Botswana well and they could not penetrate us to score baskets the way the Zambians did,” said Waya.

The Protea’s are other hot contenders in the championship which threw off Monday, and are so far a threat to Malawi for the crown.

The Queens journey to the final has been smooth sailing so far having beaten Zimbabwe 68-43, Zambia 55-48 before today’s thumping of Botswana.

Malawi side has been a marvel to watch with its slick passes that have seen Joyce Mvula score basket after basket.

Apart from making a few changes; Sindi Simtowe, Jessica Mazengera, Bridget Kumwenda, Grace Mhango, Towera Vinkhumbo, Beatrice Kadango and Caroline Ngwira have been a dominant feature in the new look Queens.

The games opened on 24 June with Malawi Queens facing Zimbabwe. On 25 June, South Africa beat Namibia 75-34, Zambia won 55 baskets to Botswana’s 41, Swaziland lost to Uganda 38-69 before Uganda thumped Namibia 72-45.

On Wednesday 26 June, Malawi secured a 55-48 victory over the Zambians, South Africa silenced Swaziland 73- 28 while Zimbabwe chalked their first win beating Botswana 51-49.

Today 27 June, Zimbabwe lost to Zambia 44-66 while Swaziland and Namibia are still in action. South Africa faces Uganda later on in the evening.
