At long last. The Malawi national netball team is today set to start preparations for the Fast5 World netball Series to be staged at Hisense Arena, Melbourne, Australia from October 29-30.

According to Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) general secretary Carol Bapu, coach Griffin ‘Zagallo’ Saenda has named a 24-member preliminary squad which was supposed to report for camp training in Blantyre yesterday.

“The team will be training at Blantyre Youth Centre [BYC] under coach Saenda and his assistant Sam Kanyenda,” she said.

Saenda yesterday said the emphasis during the three-week camping will be shooting and defending.

“The concentration will be more on shooting and defending because it appears that is where we are a bit weak, but in attack we are okay,” he said.

The veteran coach also said they will be having three sessions a day.

“The first session will be physical then tactical before switching to techinical,” he said.

Saenda has named four new faces in the squad, namely Catherine Ikwangwa (Tigresses), Wezi Mzemba, Shira Dimba, Alinafe Kamwala (Kukoma Diamonds) and Mary Banya (Blue Eagles Sisters).

Making a return to the squad is experienced Tigresses centre Beatrice Mpinganjira.

The full squad is as follows: Defenders: Towera Vinkhumbo-Nyirenda, Mzemba, Grace Mwafulirwa-Mhango, Laureen Ngwira, Ikwanga, Joana Kachilika and Juliet Sambo; Shooters: Mwawi Kumwenda, Jane Chimaliro, Jesse Mazengera, Kamwala, Joyce Mvula, Banya and Sindi Simtowe-Msowoya; Attackers: Simba, Bridgette Kumwenda, Enelesi Mdezo, Mpinnganjira, Takondwa Lwazi, Thandi Galeta-Saenda and Pilirani Msukwa. n
