Queens to start with Zambia

Malawi Queens face Zambia in the opening match of the Netball Diamond on August 15 at the Heartfelt Arena in Pretoria, South Africa.

The competition will be played in a round-robin.

At stake are world and Africa netball rankings and R250 000 prize money to be shared among the top four performers, according to an update on Netball South Africa website www.netball-sa.co.za.

The Queens are among three invited teams to the three-day event. Other teams are Botswana and the hosts, the Proteas.

In the second match of the day, the Proteas will take on Botswana. Then Malawi will face Botswana on August 16 followed by the hosts clashing with Zambia.

Africa’s number one, Malawi, go neck and neck with rivals South Africa on August 17. The match comes after the Botswana against Zambia game. The final is on August 18.

The tournament aims to celebrate the role of women in sport and in particular elevate the profile of netball in South Africa as that country celebrates women’s month, according to South Africa’s Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula.

Netball South Africa president Mimi Mthethwa also told the website that the plan is for the Netball Diamond Challenge to become an annual event hosted by South Africa, with various invitational teams being involved.

“The event forms part of Netball South Africa’s vision for the Spar Proteas that ensures we strive towards consistently being amongst the top three teams in the world, develop heroes amongst our youth and further grow the game at all levels and areas,” she said.
