Queens’ New Zealand tourney squad named

The Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) has named an 18-member squad that is scheduled to travel to New Zealand for the Fast5 World Netball Series on Friday.

The tournament will be staged in Auckland from November 9 to 11.

The squad comprises 10 players and eight officials.

The players who have been selected out of the 18 that were in camp are Caroline Mtukule-Ngwira (captain), Joana Kachilika (vice-captain), Towela Vinkhumbo, Tina Kamzati, Beatrice Kadango, Thandi Galeta, Bridget Kumwenda, Mwai Kumwenda, Laureen Ngwira and Sindi Simtowe.

Joyce Mvula and Grace Banda, who were part of the squad that participated in the Diamond Challenge in August, have been left out.

According to NAM president Rosy Chinunda, Mvula is not in the squad due to school commitments while Grace Banda is attending to pressing family matters.

Officials that will accompany the team include Chinunda, coach Griffin Saenda, his deputy Sam Kanyenda, team manager Abigail Sharrif, team doctor Vincent Tsezani. Justice Msopera from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, will be the team leader.

The team will travel to Lilongwe from Blantyre today and fly out of the country tomorrow afternoon aboard a South African Airways flight enroute to Hong Kong then Auckland according to the flight programme.

Chinunda and Saenda expressed faith in the team, saying they are of capable doing well on the international stage.

Saenda said the games against England and New Zealand will determine their real strength.

“The friendly matches will definitely help us tune up for the tournament,” said Saenda.
