Rainbow Paints 1st phase finals Saturday

Finals of the first phase of the K1 million (about $3 333) Rainbow Paints Top Six Series start on Saturday at the Blantyre Youth Centre.

Four out of eight teams have qualified for the second phase. They will play semi-finals in the morning, then third-place and finals in the afternoon.

Non-league sides Remed and Air Wing have defied the odds to find their way into the top four.

In fact, they meet each other in the semi-finals, which means one of them is guaranteed a place in the final draw of the series that will see this weekend’s finalists join seeded Escom Sisters, Bingu Tigresses, MTL Queens and Woget.

In another semi-final, Glass Bank, who won Group A, will meet Prison Sisters in the first game of the day.

Southern Region Netball League (SRNL) general secretary Annie Hanjahanja said the qualification of the non-league sides shows how lively the tournament has been.

“We are not surprised that new teams have made it to the semi-finals and that one will be in the finals and in the last six with top teams. They displayed quality netball and they deserve their places. We thank Rainbow Paints for the sponsorship as it has given us a platform to watch interesting games,” said Hanjahanja.

According to Rainbow Paints sales and marketing manager Bruno Silas, the sponsors will grace Saturday’s games.

The group stages of the final phase of the competition will start next weekend, when Queens return from New Zealand, where they are taking part in the Fast5 tournament.
