Futile effort: A worker mops the court during the game

Rains continued to disrupt the smooth running of the OG Issa Southern Region Netball League (SRNL) at the Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) on Saturday.

The court managed to host three games earlier on the day after SRNL officials and netball lovers swept and mopped the waterlogged BYC court, which has poor drainage system.

However, the recurring drizzles spoiled a match between league leaders Tigresses and MTL Queens as the court became slippery, hence unplayable. This forced the SRNL to stop the match at 12-12 in the first-quarter for continuation the following day. The game was in progress as we went to press.

According to SRNL general secretary Annie Hanjahanja-Billie, despite their efforts to complete the first-round fixtures by this month, rains continue to hamper their progress.

“The weekend’s games were supposed to be played at St Andrew’s International High School’s indoor court, but we settled for the BYC court because the school court was being renovated,” said Billie.

In the other three games, title holders Diamonds beat Prison Sisters 71-14 and Zomba Airwing Sisters 66-18 to displace MTL Queens—who beat Airwing 55-29—from the second slot on aggregate.

Diamonds and MTL Queens are tied on 24 points from eight games. Tigresses are still on top of the 13-team log table with 27 points from nine games. Woget Stars are fourth with 21 points from 11 encounters.
