Heavy rains spoiled a Southern Zone Basketball League (Sozobal) Division One title decider between Bricks and Crazy Warriors at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) last weekend, prompting the league to shift the game to this Friday.

The teams managed to play one of their two-game final series that saw Warriors winning 63-51 on Saturday, but Sozobal spokesperson Kondwani Kabowa said they could not complete the series the following day as heavy rains made the basketball courts unplayable.“It was our wish to wrap up our fixtures last weekend, but the rains were inevitable.

Therefore, we have pushed the game to this Friday,” he said.“If Warriors wins this match, they will be the champions as they already triumphed in the first series of the final. But if they lose, they will take on Bricks again on Saturday, when we will also have prize presentation.

”Warriors coach Chikondi Magomero said they will try their best to win the match and end their Sozobal title drought that spans over three decades while his Bricks counterpart Frank Phoya said they are looking forward to relive their 2016 glory.“This is our time to taste the ultimate glory and we have left no stone unturned to achieve this feat,” Magomero said.

But Phoya, whose side booted out defending champions Magang’a during the play-offs over a week ago, said: “We cannot afford to miss the title after getting rid of last year’s champions.”Meanwhile, Kukoma Eagles have grabbed the ladies title following two-straight wins (53-50 and 70-32) over last year’s champions Mikoko Mystics.

Warriors Divas finished third after beating Poly Ladies 42-20.In Division Two, Firestorms are the champions after beating Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must) Gorillas 86-73.
