Rainstorm displaces over 50 families in Mzimba

A Barely a month after a rainstorm destroyed school infrastructure and people’s houses at Kafukule in Mzimba, about 50 households are homeless after another rainstorm destroyed their houses in traditional authorities (T/As) Mzukuzuku and Mzikubola in the district.

M’mbelwa District Council desk officer for disaster risk management Thomas Munthali said about 33 houses in Mabiri, and 20 houses in Ehehleni and Mapanjira have been affected.

Munthali, who is also the local council’s director of administration, said his office has also reported the matter to the Department of Disaster Risk Management Affairs for assistance.

“ We got a positive response such that plastic sheets, plates, maize and pails, are already on the way to assist the affected people,” he said.

Mzimba South member of Parliament (MP) Maquenda Chunga (People’s Party-PP) and district commissioner (DC) Thomas Chirwa, also confirmed the reports.

Last week many houses were also destroyed by heavy rains in Bangwe Township in Blantyre where Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kondwani Nankhumwa pledged government assistance. n
