Rainstorm leaves 60 households homeless in Malawi

A rainstorm on Sunday night left over 60 households homeless and others injured in the central Malawi district of Salima.

One of the rainstorm victims, Amwayi Pachika, said the incident happened at around 10pm.

“I was in my house the time the rains started. I then heard a disturbing noise accompanied by a cry for help. When I went out, I found that my neighbour’s house had collapsed to a foundation level. We managed to rescue the husband and took him to hospital,” said Pachika

She said all her belongings, including 20 bags of maize, were soaked after her house’s roof was blown off.

Traditional Authority Kambwiri, in whose area the incident happened, asked government through the district commissioner’s office to assist the victims.

Salima DC Ali Phiri was not available for a comment, but district director of administration Redgeson Mkolombwe confirmed receiving reports of the disaster.

Some of the affected villages are Liganga, Mwamadi, Kachitsa, Daulesi, Kumchakama, Kawanga, Kambwiri, Chitekwere and Chimbalanga.
