The 25-year-old had been champion of the race since 2008. Last year, he could not defend it due to lack of financial and material support.

However, Rajani Suppliers lifted his spirit as he went to take part in this year’s two-day event which started on Saturday, by giving him the new tyres.

“The tyres of my bicycle were worn out. It would have been extremely difficult for me to contest this year,” he said.

According to Rajani Suppliers manager Maisuriy Manish, they assisted the cyclist in appreciation of his achievements both on the local and international scenes.

Kathumba is one of Malawi’s best cyclists who has won several competitions such as the Presidential Race and the Illovo Classic. He has represented Malawi at international events such as the Cape Argus Race in South Africa.
