Rangers’ FMB title defence on hold

Mzuzu City Rangers FC have to put their FMB League title defence celebration on hold because the Northern Region Youth Football Committee (NRYFC) has said they have a case to answer.

Rangers were in wild celebrations at Mzuzu Stadium on Saturday after they scored in each half to beat City Stars 2-0 to finish top of the league with 66 points and defend the K4 million FMB Cup.

Matifeyo Nyirenda scored first before Lyton Kapunda struck the second.

In an interview after the match, NRYFC general secretary Mwawi Mwanza said Rangers’ celebration can be short-lived unless they can successfully defend themselves in a case they are alleged to have used two players serving red card suspension.

“The Rangers will say ‘we have crossed the river’ upon defending the case; otherwise, they have a mountain to climb,” said Mwanza.

He said Rangers were aware of the football rules, but deliberately tested the waters and will be punished.

City Stars have finished second with 59 points although they have games in hand against Blackpool and Chiputula FC.
