Reckless driver on full remand

The Blantyre Magistrate’s Court has put Bester Chibisa, 21, a minibus driver, on full remand for causing death and serious injuries to two people due to reckless driving.

The two victims are 17-year-old Ernest Kaunde who died while receiving medical treatment and Kondwani White, 19, who was discharged after receiving medical attention.

Blantyre Police assistant spokesperson Lameck Thembachako justified the full remand, saying the case docket has been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal opinion.

“The accident happened on March 29 at night between Four Square Church and Wayede Bottlestore in Mbayani Township along the Blantyre-Zalewa Road but the driver was arrested on April 3 after police’s further investigations,” said Thembachako.

He said a police prosecutor told the open court that Chibisa was driving a Toyota Hiace Minibus registration RU 2724 from Kameza with passengers on board and upon reaching Four Square Church, he reportedly lost control of the vehicle and swerved to the extreme left side where he hit the two pedestrians who were walking.

“It was reported that passengers rebelled against him and he jumped from the minibus and ran away before some passengers removed vehicle documents and surrendered them to Kabula Police Unit,” said Thembachako.

He said Chibisa was formally charged with five traffic statutory offences which he admitted to without being tortured.
