The Malawi Red Cross (MRCS) will this week celebrate 80 years of humanitarian services with the inauguration of the annual Red Cross flag week this Tuesday.

According to a press statement from MRCS signed by communications manager Horace Nyaka, May 8 is the birthday of founder of the society Swiss national Henry Dunant, who founded the movement in 1859.

“Through the years, the movement has assisted victims of both natural and manmade disasters, reaching out to millions of people world over.

“During the flag week, Malawi Red Cross collects donations from well-wishers to help them finance more activities among the country’s needy. The theme for this year’s flag week is ‘Youth on Move’, which focuses on youth engagement and promotion of a culture of non-violence and peace,” reads the statement.—The Nation
