Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) has started engaging sex workers operating in Salima through Tithandizane HIV and Aids Project the organisation is currently implementing in the district.

Tithandizane project officer Manfoster Moyo said the project, which is being co-implemented by Theatre for Change, seeks to equip the high risk grouping which often suffers abuse.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, Moyo said sex workers need protection from society.

Sex workers face abuse

“There are a number of issues which force these people to engage in sex work and I believe it is only when we engage them through dialogue sessions that we can easily plan together a proper and sustainable exit strategy,” he said.

Sex workers from Lilongwe and Kasungu also underwent similar training which also equips those involved in the trade with behavioural change for possible career change.

Speaking in an interview, one of the sex workers who had participated in one of the sessions but opted for anonymity, admitted that they encounter a number of problems while serving their clients. She thanked MRCS for the training.

Salima, being a lakeshore district, is one of the areas with a high number of sex workers, majority of whom operate at Chipoka, Kaphatenga, Msangu and Kamuzu Road Market trading centres.
