Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) in Chikwawa has equipped people in the district with disaster risk reduction (DRR) equipment to enable them act swiftly during natural disasters.
The equipment, that included megaphones, bicycles, solar torches, rain coats and gumboots, were handed over on Monday during a ceremony at group Village Head Mwananjobvu under Traditional Authority (T/A) Ngowe with call to the people to relocate to higher places.
The beneficiaries are people from four village civil protection committees, namely Mwananjobvu, Mchacha, Khungubwe and Thudzu.
In her remarks, Chikwawa Red Cross project officer Cecelia Banda said they are confident the committees will act swiftly before disasters destroy life and property.
She said: “Malawi Red Cross Society is implementing a disaster risk management project in the district. The project seeks to improve the early warning systems.”
Chikwawa district assistant DRR officer Francis Kadzokoya commended MRCS for the efforts to alleviate the suffering of people who are affected by floods every year. n
