Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) is grappling with a K600 million deficit from its 2017 budget of K1.5 billion, a development that is hampering service delivery.

In the first quarter, the society spent K375 million on its activities, according to its president Levisoni Changole.

The society has since appealed for support from local companies to fund its activities.

Changole said this in an interview on the sidelines of the launch of this year’s blankets distribution exercise in Nkhata Bay yesterday.

Earlier this month, MRCS made another appeal for support of the flag week.

One of the beneficiaries of the campaign, who is visually impared, Nelson Nyirenda, said the blanket will go a long way in warming him during the winter season.

The society has been distributing blankets from Japanese Blanket for Africa Campaign to the needy and vulnerable in the country for the past 22 years.
