Red Cross supports Phalombe, Mulanje heavy rains victims

Malawi Red Cross Society has disbursed funds to 676 households affected by strong winds and heavy rains that destroyed houses in Phalombe and Mulanje districts.

In an interview, Malawi Red Cross Society communications and humanitarian diplomacy specialist Felix Washon said the support was based on the assessment conducted in the districts immediately after the disaster early this month.

“Based on the results of the assessment, each household is getting between K27 000 and K67 000 depending on the magnitude of their problem,” he said.

Phalombe district commissioner (DC) Rodrick Mateauma urged beneficiaries to use the money to its intended purpose.

His Mulanje counterpart Stallichi Mwambiwa appealed to  well-wishers to assist the victims.

One of the beneficiaries, Floney Mitumba from Chibisa Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Jenala in Phalombe, commended Malawi Red Cross Society for the support.

About 2 800 households in four traditional authorities in Phalombe and 1 238 households from seven villages in T/A Mabuka in Mulanje were affected by the stormy weather.
