Red Lions beat Blantyre United

Emmanuel Banda’s strike in the 51st minute propelled Red Lions to a 1-0 victory over Blantyre United and collected maximum points in a first round TNM Super League encounter on Saturday.

The match was played at Zomba Community Centre ground before a sizable crowd, which included the sponsors’ representatives.

The goalless first-half produced countless thrills as the visitors’ Sparrow Msowoya, Lawson Chilewe and some deft touches from Dalitso Sailesi on the left kept the soldiers under panic.

However, Blantyre United’s free-flowing football was marred by the bumpy pitch.

A miss by Chilewe resulted in a quick counter-attack by the home side. A long searching ball from Benesi Kaisi fell invitingly on the foot of Malumbo Mkandawire who unselfishly set up Banda to score from close range.

Red Lions coach Collins Nkuna hailed his charges for winning the first game of the league whereas his counterpart Eliah Kananji bemoaned his strikers’ poor finishing.
