Red Lions displace Silver Strikers

Red Lions recovered from a 3-0 loss to Epac FC on Saturday to beat Silver Strikers 1-0 in a TNM match played at Silver Stadium in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, on Sunday.

Former Civo United striker Dickson Mbetewa Junior scored the only goal of the match 21 minutes into the game after he headed a corner kick to condemn the bankers to a third straight loss.

The hosts could have equalised three minutes later, when referee Jones Makuwira awarded them a penalty, but Ndaziona Chatsalira blasted wide, sending Silver faithful into agony.

Red Lions upped the pressure and created five clear chances, but could not score.

In the second-half, Silver coach Franco Ndawa got the wrath of the fans when he removed Peter Pindani for Green Harawa. The decision angered Silver fans who, for the rest of the game, ridiculed him.

Lions’ Dave Banda was voted man of the match.

After the match, Silver fans besieged the dressing room demanding the resignation of Ndawa and Hellings Mwakasungura. Police had to come to the rescue of Ndawa.

Ndawa refused to take questions, saying he was in a painful situation.

Lions coach Collins Nkuna was ecstatic after the match.
