Redefining versatility; Martse breathes change in urban music

Malawi continues to give birth to a horde of talented artists and Martse is one of the names in that category.

One cannot talk about the current urban music atmosphere without mentioning the artist, who has proved to be another force to reckon with on the country’s music scene.martse

Martse, real name Martin Nkhata, is among the urban creams that have conquered the music industry with their creative and soothing sounds.

His versatility, especially on vernacular rap, makes him stand out. At first, it was all about Gwamba dominating the list of Chichewa rap favourites, but this time around, the rapper faces stiff competition from Martse.

The list of urban music troops that have taken the country’s music industry by storm include Stitch Fray and his Trap Squad, Saint, Bucci, Mwanache, Dali, Kelly Kay, Sonye, Diktator, Sangie, Mafo, Fredokiss, Gwamba, Nesness, Crazy G, Malinga Mafia, Malceba, Nepman and Mzuzu-based K-Man.

The 21-year-old Martse, who is a student in Nutrition and Food Technology at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar), broke onto the music limelight with the hit single called Go Deeper, which was inspired by the era of prophets.

“Basically, my music is inspired by life’s events. I sing what is applicable to people so that my fans should relate my music to their own everyday life,” says Martse.

He released follow-up hit singles such as Pin ya BB, Zikupweteke and Bendeka. If truth be told, Martse is one of the favourites among the country’s urban fanatics.

Martse is not only a studio artist, but also a versatile stage performer who has impressed fans with his laid back style.

However, the artist confesses that he does not understand the massive support he has in the country.

“I really find it hard to believe that people love my music, especially when I am singing on stage. You just know that people blessed you with such amazing supporters when they sing along your music,” says Martse.

Martse is multitalented. Apart from writing and singing, he is also into recording his own music instrumentals.

He attributes the success of his music career to God.

“I never thought I had potential in music because the people I was surrounded with were not supportive. They were even mocking my music and never wanted to see me doing rap. I experienced such a tough going but I didn’t give up because God was on my side. He was whispering into my ears that I shouldn’t give up,” said Martse.n
