Redifining Malawi’s fashion industry

Listen to this article

For a woman to feel good and sexy, one thing that matters is a great pair of shoes. High heels, no matter what size, colour, or trend are enough to make a woman feel like satisfied.

Malawi’s fashion designers have been flaunting their stuff on the catwalk scene. But one thing has been missing…shoes!

Now, enter the bubbly Maureen Supuni Bellinger. She is a Malawian based in Chicago and has the answer to ladies feet problems in Malawi.

She is set to launch her flagship shop, MoMoz Galaxy, in Malawi’s commercial city, Blantyre.

Flipping through her Facebook photos, one can notice Maureen for her classic, elegant shoes fitting of a diva.

“Maureen is just a simple Malawian girl who loves life-to the fullest. Born in a family of two boys and four girls, I am the last but one. I don’t call myself a designer, but rather a fashion trend setter and that is why I don’t have my designing company?” said Bellinger in an e-mail interview.

“I don’t go by the whole match-matchy, but I like unique things, they don’t have to be expensive but just nice quality and you can say I love colour.  I always challenge people, they can give me a trash bag and I will wear it gracefully and with style and poise,” said Bellinger.

She said the thing that motivates her is simply dreams.

“Everyone has that “it” factor in them, they just got to find and utilise it to the best ability. And I want to say I found mine, apart from loving clothes and style, I love shoes, especially heels,” she boasted.

It is this love that started at a tender age that has been Bellinger’s driving force into a shoe ‘fashionista’. After some years, she decided to open her shoe’s shop, of course, with a bit of clothes in Blantyre.

“I was in Malawi between December and January this year, since 1998. I have always sent stuff to sell in Malawi, but not that much. Others would point and stare at me without mercy and I promised I would send them. So that motivated and it marked the beginning of MoMoz Galaxy,” she explained.

“My shop will open soon, but I cannot provide dates and location yet as we are looking into this right now. But I must say, am so proud of my beautiful country as the designing industry continues to grow. Look at Chiccu Gondwe, Cathy Kamthunzi and Lilly Alfonso, they are all excelling in the fashion world. It is my hope and prayer to have Malawi Fashion Week, where we will all come and show different talents in different categories,” added Bellinger.
