Reflecting on festive season

Thank God for holidays and the opportunity they give human beings to rest, relax and rejuvenate. After a month away from work and Every Woman, I can safely say that I am fully charged and ready to take on whatever comes along. Many thanks to Cheu Mita for overseeing the supplement while I was away.

Being the festive season, I am sure that a lot of you are actually going on leave at the moment and being back in the office at a time when everyone is dying to get away might not be that appealing.

For most of us, the festive season is a time when we push our stresses and anxieties aside, replacing them with gaiety, excitement and expectations of a great wind down to the year. During this period, we get to spend time with family members from far-off, who we haven’t seen all year long. It gives us an excuse to spend in excess, eat in excess, party in excess, drink past our limits and basically over-indulge ourselves. Somewhere among the Christmas carols, plump Santa Claus, decorated trees and gift wrapped presents, we lose our senses and end up overdoing everything. The result? A month-long hangover in January where we can barely make it from one day to the next because our finances are in such bad shape.

The festive season is a glorious period but handled the wrong way, it can quickly turn into a nightmare whose effects leave us reeling for a long time afterwards. Crimes increase during the period. Accidents caused by drunk driving also increase during this season and lives are lost at a time everyone is supposed to be celebrating. Individuals that spend overzealously might find themselves broke at the beginning of the next month, with no clue as to where money for their children’s school fees will come from.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with letting loose; in fact we all need to do so from time to time. However,  as an adult, to let loose means celebrating responsibly. Because we would love all of you to have a lovely Christmas and an incredible start to the new year, this month, Every Woman will feature tid bits on a variety of things you need to know about celebrating responsibly. If you need information on anything from making holiday plans, formulating budgets for the season, drawing up shopping lists, making Christmas meals on a budget, securing your home, updating your wardrobe with only the items you need and so much more, just pick up a copy of Every Woman.

So, here’s to celebrating in style and getting ready for a marvellous Christmas; the countdown has began!
