Reforms on course—JB

Malawi President Joyce Banda has said her government has prescribed the country’s ailing economy with six magic tablets to bring it back to normalcy.

Banda was speaking on Friday at Sunbird Nkopola Lodge’s Lakeshore International Conference Centre in Mangochi when she opened a three–day Workshop on National Dialogue on the Economy.

She said government has set out six economic recovery reforms to bring back on track the country’s economy, she described as ailing.

Banda reiterated that the country continues to face numerous challenges ranging from poor political governance to a slowdown in foreign and domestic investments.

“During the State of the Nation Address of the budget sitting [of Parliament], I highlighted a number of challenges that need to be addressed in order to revive the economy which range from poor governance to closing down of businesses,” she said.

Banda said the long to short-term economic recovery plan has been characterised by the recent devaluation of the kwacha by 49 percent and restoring bilateral relations with traditional donors including the United Kingdom.

Earlier, Jonathan Oppenheimer, founder and chairperson of Brenthrst Foundation, said the national dialogue on economy was central to building legacy and future of generations to come.

The conference attracted over 100 local and international delegates from the civil society, the Cabinet, government and the private sector.—Mana
