A thletics Association of Malawi (AAM) will hold regional cross country championships this Saturday to select athletes that will represent Malawi at Africa Cross Country in Cameroon in March.
In the Central Region, the championship will be held at Mponela in Dowa District while the Northern Region will hold its championship in Nkhata Bay District.
Zomba’s Gymnkana Club will host the Southern Region Cross Country.
AAM president Godfrey Phiri said the regional cross country competitions will identify athletes to participate at the National Cross Country to be held on February 13 in Mzuzu.
“After the National Cross Country, we will select a team that will represent Malawi at Africa Cross Country in Cameroon on March 12,” he said.
Phiri said the competitions will be sponsored by Malawi National Council of Sports to the tune of K2 million.
“But companies are free to come and assist and they will be allowed to display their products during the competitions,” Phiri said.
National coach Francis Munthali has urged athletes to take the regional competitions seriously if they are to make it to the Cameroon Africa Cross Country.
“This is a very important phase in the preparations for the Africa Cross Country,” Munthali said.
