Expectant mothers in Rumphi have been asked to register their babies after delivery.

Rumphi District Hospital nursing officer Evelyn Malikha made the appeal at Mzokoto Health Centre on Friday during a sensitisation campaign.

She said registration of babies will help people to know the number of babies born at a particular time.

“Census enables   government   to plan and organise facilities for the living standards of people in sectors such as health and education,” said Malikha.

She said babies born in homes should still go for registration at a health facility to get a birth certificate.

“We appeal to traditional leaders to continue enlightening the community on the importance of having newly born babies registered,” said Malikha.

Mzokoto Health Centre medical assistant Martin Soko said they advise expectant mothers to have names for their unborn babies ready.

“We will ensure that the newly born baby is named and registered    before discharged,” he said. n
