Relentless rains cause flash floods in Mzuzu

Flash floods have hit some parts of Mzuzu City today following heavy and persistent rains that started on Friday night, leaving some areas cut off.

The city’s disaster officer Precious Mandala has confirmed that the flash floods have affected Masasa, Chiputula, Mchengautuba, Lupaso, Nkhorongo and Zolozolo West which has Ching’ambo and Botanic townships.

“It is specifically reported that a number of fields and cross bridges in Lupaso and Nkhorongo areas have been swept away whilst some houses in zolozolo west, Lubinga, Chibanja, Masasa, Mchengautuba have either partly or completely collapsed and personal belongings such as electrical equipment, beddings, food items distinctly damaged,” said Mandala.

According to Mandala no death or injury has been reported so far.

Mandala said the council has deployed a team to carry out a rapid disaster assessment in all reported localities to ascertain the extent of damage.
