My Thought

Revealing too much on Facebook

Listen to this article

The advent of Facebook some years ago has completely transformed people’s social lives, bringing with it new networking aspects that we never thought possible the past two decades.

With facebook has come the ease of speedy and cheap networking with all kinds of people across the globe. At the click of a mouse, you can get connected to anyone from any corner of the world.

Various interest groups on the social network also help members to link up with people who share their interests and passion. For instance, gardeners meet gardeners while mothers meet fellow mothers to share experiences and learn from one another.

There is also the advantage of discovering forgotten old pals that would have otherwise remained forgotten without the simple search command on the Facebook page.

Then there is the whole virtual space on the personalised wall where you can freely spill all your pictures, thoughts, feelings or emotions with the whole world—at least with the people whose eyes feed on your wall.

Facebook offers the otherwise rare freedom to be seen and be heard as well as receive constant updates on what people think about issues and developments all over the world.

Yet, when I bump into an angry message on a wall of a fuming husband or wife who, for some reason, decides to publicise their anger on their partner, I can’t help but wonder if this social platform is being put to good use.

Why should family disagreements be exposed to the whole world just because a social network allows you to? Do we really have to allow Facebook to erode the dignity of marriage to the extent that marriage disputes should be known to every person who cares to read a wall status?

I cannot help but raise an eyebrow when the buying of a new dress or shoe should be everybody’s business such that every time some people buy something new, they want everyone to know how the dress or shoe fits. I mean, should the buying of a handbag really be worth the news that the whole of your community on facebook should know?

I don’t have to start on the travels. Some people have resorted to reporting on Facebook every movement they make. Every time they hop on a plane, you will certainly see a picture of their face leaning on a windowpane just to make sure the world identifies that the window is none other than that of a plane.

Someone has a headache and instead of rushing to pharmacy or a hospital; they rush to Facebook as if the social network treats headaches.

Why should everything be everybody’s business just because one is on Facebook? Doesn’t this explain why so many of us are addicted to the social network to the extent that family, friendships and jobs are suffering?
