Malawi Police in the Northern Region have expressed worry about increasing cases of suicide arising from marital problems.

Northern Region police spokesperson Norah Chimwala in an interview on Sunday said the region recorded four cases of suicide last week which involved men hanging themselves in Mzuzu, Rumphi, Chitipa and Karonga .

“This is a very worrisome situation. So, we are urging the public to seek advice from community leaders or police. Resorting to killing oneself over a problem is not a solution,” said Chimwala.

She said the first incident happened in Mzuzu where 40-year-old Syford Ngulube of Samuel Maliro Village, T/A Mbelwa in Mzimba hanged himself in his bedroom a few hours after quarrelling with his wife.

In Rumphi, Kondwani Nyirenda (28) of Kasimba Village, T/A Mwankhunikila in the district hanged himself from a tree after quarrelling with his wife.

In Karonga, 23 year-old Benson Sichali Junior of Mwangolera Village hanged himself due to family problems.

In Chitipa, 42 year-old Horribin Munyenyembe of Kasuntha Village hanged himself after he was allegedly caught red-handed with a woman.
