Road accident claims woman’s life in Mangochi

A 52-year-old woman identified as Martha Kusweje was on Monday killed by a vehicle at Mangochi Catholic Church roundabout.

Mangochi Police Station assistant spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi said the driver of the vehicle, Rav4 Station Wagon registration BT 9292,  Garnet Fologonya, 51, of James Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kuntaja in Blantyre, was driving towards the direction of Namwera.

“Upon arrival at the roundabout, he failed to control the motor vehicle and it overturned and hit the woman who was walking,” she said.

Tepani Daudi said following the impact of the accident, the woman sustained fractures on both legs and internal injuries and died on the spot.

She said the driver escaped with minor general body pains while his vehicle was extensively damaged.

Meanwhile, police in the district are advising drivers to always follow road safety precautions to avoid road accidents.

Kusweje came from  Chipalamawamba Village, T/A Mponda in the district. n
