Road accident kills one in Karonga

A head-on collision between a bus and a double cabin pick-up vehicle in Karonga on Monday killed a Ministry of Health (MoH) driver and seriously injured five others.

The bus registration BP4459 belonging to Interline Bus Services collided with a Toyota Hilux registration MG 452 AE belonging to MoH.

The bus driver failed to negotiate a bend

The driver, identified as Mussa Chikuya, 47, of Mizinga Village, Traditional Authority Chowe in Mangochi, died on the spot while five passengers in the Toyota Hilux and the bus sustained serious injuries.

Karonga Police Station deputy spokesperson George Mulewa confirmed the accident yesterday.

He said the bus was coming from Chitipa heading to Karonga when the driver failed to negotiate a bend and hit the Toyota Hilux which was coming from the opposite direction.

“The accident occurred at a place called Tenenthe along Karonga-Chitipa Road. The Interline Bus was driven by a Mr Million,” he said.

Meanwhile, MoH spokesperson Adrian Chikumbe confirmed that the government vehicle involved in the accident belonged to MoH.

“I can confirm that we lost a driver in the process. It is very unfortunate. The vehicle carried officials from Lilongwe who were going to Chitipa on supervisory duties,” he said.
