He said the station registered 21 cases during the corresponding period last year.

James said some of the accidents could have been avoided if road users were careful.

“There are a number of factors contributing to the rise in the number of accidents, but in most cases, accidents are caused by failure to observe road signs and traffic regulations,” said James, adding that some young people play on the road.

James said police have also enhanced traffic checks to reduce accidents.

On Wednesday, the district recorded a fatal accident in which a 10-year-old girl, Grace Kamanga and Sofiana Chiumia, 43, died after being hit by a vehicle. Police said the two were standing at a bus stop at Kawalazi when a vehicle swerved and hit them.

Commenting on the issue Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services (DRTSS) spokesperson Angellina Makwecha said they have been carrying out awareness campaigns to ensure road users are conversant and comply with road traffic rules and regulations.

She said the directorate will continue with the campaigns. n
