The Association of Early Child Development in Malawi has donated bicycles to 40 caregiver mentors in Blantyre under the School-readiness Initiative Project funded by the Rodger Federer Foundation.

Speaking on Friday when he presented the donation, the Rodger Federer Foundation Project School readiness initiative project officer Blessings Kaipa said the project seeks to help parents to prepare children for enrollment in Standard One by engaging them in play activities that switch their focus towards primary school education.

He said: “The project ensures smooth transition of children from community-based childcare centres to primary schools.

“In the community, we are working with parents to help them know what happens at the childcare centre through monthly events.”

Kaipa said the mentor checks on parents and caregivers if they are on track with the transition steps.

Blantyre District Social Welfare Office early child development adviser in Traditional Authority Makata, Blessings Malen, said the bicycles will ease mobility challenges the mentors faced during their outreach activities.

A beneficiary, Felister Beyadi, said the bicycle will motivate her to engage parents to prepare their children for primary school.

The caregiver mentors also received a backpack and an umbrella each.

The project is funded to the tune of $10 million (about K8 billion) spread over six years.
