If I were

Rodney Jose

Inspector General (IG) of the Malawi Police Service (MPS), I would act on the escalating cases of political violence in the countdown to the May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections.

If I were Jose, I would appreciate that the way my institution handles such cases will be a real test of my pedigree. Oh yes, Jose, I would realise that it does not paint a good picture of the service that out of 15 cases, just one has been swiftly acted on.

If I were the top cop, I would also take it on the chin and admit that the MPS appears to be treating cases in which supporters of the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) are involved with kid gloves.

I would be reminded that no one is above the law and, therefore, the need  for me and my team to take a firm line by acting without fear or favour.

I would realise that being an IG requires more effort than just looking elegant in that uniform and enjoying salutes of honour that go with it.

But I am not the Jose, but a mere scribe that is Garry.
