Following the current need for medical supplies at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe, the Rotary Club of Bwaila held a fun run on Saturday to raise money for some of the much needed equipment at the hospital.

The fun run, aimed at acquiring over K5 million, was held along Area 6 road between Mchinji and Chilambula roundabouts and involved activities such as races and raffle draws.

Bwaila Rotary Club president Hamment Tanna, said the club wants to buy monitors, incubators for the children’s wards, and other equipment which are critically needed at the KCH.

“We decided to be involved with this hospital because it is a referral hospital which covers a wide area in the Central Region,” said Tanna.

He said the club also donated a ventilator at KCH last year and has been involved in other projects, including constructing ecological sanitation pit latrines, providing clean drinking water and drilled boreholes in Ntchisi, Dowa and Lilongwe districts.”

Tanna thanked Rotary partners, including the Toyota Malawi, Seba Foods, CDH bank, Airtel, EY and Speaker of Parliament Henry Chimunthu Banda for gracing the run.

Chimunthu Banda, the guest of honour to the event, said he was impressed with the noble cause of the run, which is to support the sick at the hospital.

“This is a great idea considering the problems at the hospital,” said Banda who upon request, agreed to become a member of the Rotary Club.

The winners of the raffle draw went away with an air ticket to South Africa and a mountain bike whilst race winners were given trophies and vouchers at Chipiku stores.

Other consolation prizes included fertiliser, seeds, maize bags, meal vouchers, and a night accommodation ticket for two at US Executive Lodge in Lilongwe.
