Royal Heritage win South Alliance Capital Schools golf

Royal Heritage Academy on Friday won the Alliance Capital Golf Inter-Schools Challenge for the Southern Region at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC).

The tournament, which attracted five teams, saw Royal Heritage registering 117 strokes to pip runners-up Saint Andrews International Primary School (Saips) by two strokes.

Last year’s champions Phoenix International Primary School finished third with 124 stokes.

This means that the three teams have qualified for the national finals to be staged at Lilongwe Golf Club where they will be joined by two Central Region-based teams Arcacia and Bishop Mackenzie international primary schools.

Royal Heritage captain Talumba Ntaba described the contest as tight.

“It was so close and it had to go down to the wire, no wonder we were separated by only two strokes with the runners-up. Now we will switch focus to the national finals and we will train hard to ensure that we win it as well,” she said.

Ntaba attributed her team’s feat to good preparations.

The other participating teams were South End and Namiwawa.

An official from Alliance Capital Natasha Nkhoma said they were impressed with the level of competition.

“It shows that our objective to uplift the standards of golf at school level are being met. We want to be part of initiatives that help to uplift the young golfers to help them realise their dreams,” she said.

National junior golf coach Dingaan Chirwa, who facilitated the tournament, said the competition is getting better every year.

“I am pretty sure that going forward we have a team that can put Malawi on the map,” he said. n
