RP gearing for convention

With just two years before the 2014 general elections, Republican Party (RP) president Stanley Masauli says he is ready to quit the party’s top position during the party’s convention.

Speaking in an interview on Friday, Masauli said RP is raising funds to hold the convention soon.

He also said his party will not partner anyone during the general elections.

“RP is now in a fund-raising campaign to call for a convention where all positions will be up for grabs. I am ready to relinquish power to someone else. Let others take the party through to 2014 polls.

“The door is open for other people to join the party now so that we develop Malawi from the grass roots level. Why should we talk of continued leadership as if others are there to lead the party and [some are] supporters?” he said.

Masauli said RP’s constitution stipulates that the president of the party should be the one to call for a convention at any time.

“It is that time that we have to be vibrant. People need to know what we stand for. We want to develop families so they have food, money and their children should have jobs. If we do that, forex will not be a problem,” he said.

Masauli, who came third in the 2009 general elections after President Bingu wa Mutharika and MCP-UDF alliance’s John Tembo, said he has been silent because he pledged to accept the results during the presidential prayers breakfast held at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre.
