Rudo speaks on Search for a Star judge role

Rudo Chakwera is one of Malawi’s renowned professional recording gospel artists.

She is not only a singer, song writer, model, voice and music trainer, entrepreneur, but also a professional. With three albums to her name, Rudo has also collaborated with a number of artists.

“The albums are besides other pieces of work that have not been compiled but have been of significance to the nation. For instance, the songs I composed for Women in Politics event for women Parliamentarians in the Sadc region.

“I have also collaborated with other well known Malawian artists and featured in quite a number of projects like Peter Mawanga’s all star song Sungani Mwambo, Q Malewezi’s song on HIV and Aids, Stories of HIV and Aids – Titenge Udindo albums, and Airtel’s Mwezi Wawala (Tithyole Dansi),” she says.

Daughter to iconic music legend Isaac Mkukupa, Rudo has performed at various national and international events including the Miss Malawi pageantry, Women of Distinction Awards (Woda) and before African Heads of State during the Sadc meeting.

Married to Pastor Nick Chakwera, who is Youth and Music Pastor at International Christian Assembly and son to Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera, Rudo is a mother of two; Samuel, 7 and Tehillah, 3.

Rudo, who has previously served as vice-secretary on the Musicians Union of Malawi (MUM) Women’s Desk and is currently working as Gender and HIV and Aids Mainstreaming Coordinator for Farmers Union of Malawi, is studying for her Master’s Degree with Esami and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Chancellor College with majors in music and drama.

The artist says she is happy to be part of the SSS 2014 crew as the platform accords her the opportunity to give back to Malawi in terms of music.

She said: “I am so delighted to be part of 2014 Malawi’s SSS. It is a fulfillment of what I aim to do in my life as it grants me the opportunity not only to influence young girls and boys in my nation, but it also allows me to contribute towards the development of Music in my country.

“I am an avid believer of Malawi and its talent and I believe that through nurturing of such talent we will not only inspire our young people to strive for great things in their lives but also if done well, we can put Malawi on the global map because Malawi has what it takes to shine anywhere else in the world.”

She says her involvement in SSS has come at the right time as she currently involved in activities that will shape her future.

Said Rudo: “I have been blessed with other commitments and responsibilities in my life that require my talent and skills. I owe this to God who helps me juggle all these commitments by his grace. I count it an honour that Sunbird trusts that I can do a good job serving Malawi in this role as Malawi’s 2014 SSS female judge. Big up to my parents and family for all their support. I would not have made it here without them”.
