Rumphi DC, MP ‘wrangles’ resolved

Ministry of Local Government has given Rumphi district commissioner (DC) Fred Movete two weeks to investigate and report on allegations by Rumphi West legislator Yona Mkandawire (independent) that he misappropriated project funds.

The ministry’s order follows social media posts on the disagreement between the DC and Mkandawire.

The differences drew mixed reactions from the public as some called for the immediate transfer of the DC while some faulted the parliamentarian.

Mkandawire (L) and Movete after reconciliation

On Monday, Deputy Minister of Local Government Halima Daud said the ministry’s investigations showed that the misunderstandings arose due to misinformation and poor communication between council members and the secretariat.

She said: “The other problem was lack of transparency and accountability at the council. Whatever is decided by the council should be shared with stakeholders.

“For instance, it should be clear on how much money has been used or left for a particular project.”

Daud asked Local Government Finance Committee to investigate allegations of mismanagement of funds and find out what really happened.

The council’s chairperson Happy  Chirambo said he was satisfied with the outcome of the meeting because all issues were settled.

Movete and Mkandawire said there were no more grudges between them.
